Melamine is essentially a type of laminate, but not all laminates are made from melamine. When melamine laminates are made, they are formed by molding a melamine/formaldehyde combination into a durable plastic sheet made by applying a certain amount of pressure per square inch to the laminate. The amount of pressure applied changes the classification of the laminate. Melamine is a low pressure laminate (LPL) as it is made with 300-500 pounds of pressure per square inch. High-pressure laminate (HPL), also called Formica, is made with more than 1400 pounds per square inch of pressure.
Thus, melamine resin, originally an organic compound, is formed through polymerization as a hard and durable plastic material. The melamine board can then be applied to particleboard, plywood, or medium density fiberboard (MDF) to form a melamine panel. It can be found in a variety of colors, patterns, sizes and thicknesses.
When considering whether melamine board is a good option, of course, you also want to know its advantages. Melamine has several advantages:
As with almost anything, Melamine also has its downsides. For example, while the material itself is waterproof, if water enters the underlying particle board, it can cause the melamine to warp. Another potential disadvantage comes from incorrect installation. While melamine is very sturdy, if not installed correctly, the chipboard substrate can be damaged and cause the melamine to crumble. Since melamine board edges are unfinished, it will require an edge banding to cover the melamine edges.
Now the real question is: "What is melamine board used for?" Melamine board is often used in kitchen and bathroom cabinets due to its durability. It is also a good option for countertops, office furniture, whiteboards and even flooring.
